In India, growing up, most of us were used to the smoke of Sambrani (Frankincense) on auspicious days and sometimes to dry our hair. A bunch of charcoals would be lit and once they heated up, the Frankincense resin would be added slowly to the hot coal. As soon as the heat touches the Frankincense resin, it releases a misty smoke and the most enthralling aroma that transports us to worlds we never have seen but have always known! It is the incense in it’s most natural and naked form, straight from the trees of the deep jungles.
Sourced sustainably from: This pure and high quality Frankincense Resin is sourced from the forests of India. In March of 2022, we went on a Jungle camp for 4 nights and 5 days in the forests of Periyar with ex-poachers and smugglers, who have now turned over a new leaf and protect the forests they once hunted in. They showed us the Boswellia tree with its fresh resin (Frankicense) oozing from it’s bark and trunk. When one of our guide gently lit a fire against the oozing resin, it emanated the most ethereal scent, flooding us with joy, thrill, exhilaration and a feeling of deep grounding, all at once. We eventually sourced a good amount of Frankincense from the local tribesmen who gather the Frankincense resin, wild cardamom, honey and some more deep forest herbs for their livelihood. So know that, every jar of this Frankincense resin has been touched and blessed by the old spirits of the Periyar Forests and the gentle hearts and hands that protect it.
The Magical belief: Burning Frankincense is a form of smudging in Indian culture. Frankincense is lit during special prayers, housewarming ceremonies, on birthdays, on festivals. It is supposed to bring in health and healing to the house and calm and joy to the lives.
The Science: Historically, many cultures practice smudging in one way or the other. While Frankincense Resin is used in India, Native Americans used Sage, South Americans smudged with Palo Santo. The reason was that, back in the time, houses were built with natural materials and there was no air conditioning or heat within the house. When it rained, moisture would get trapped in the crevices of the house and provided a breeding ground for Mold and mildew which was dangerous to inhale. So our ancestors smudged the space to dry these tight corners with smoke. This gradually led to the superstition smudging wards off evil spirits (ill health) and brings prosperity and good health (when no mold grows, we stay healthy obviously). Isn’t is marvelous all the wonderful things our ancestors did which was really science but under the pretext of superstition?
