Chaaya- Wild turmeric face mask
Chaaya face mask (also called Ubtan or Ubvartan in India) is an ancient Ayurvedic body purifier made by blending several herbs, spices, pulses, fruits and plants to achieve a healthy and fresh skin. The concoction has a rich earthy aroma from all the plant matter that work together to deeply cleanse the skin to reveal a natural glow.
The Ritual: Set a positive intention. Take a tsp or more of the mask in a small bowl and mix it with some plain yogurt or milk to make a smooth paste. You can also use water or any hydrosol of your choice. Yogurt is preferred since the natural lactic acid from Yogurt also acts as a gentle exfoliator. Apply the paste on the face and decollate and allow to dry until it starts feeling tight. Rinse when dry. Moisturize generously after. Use at least twice a week to see the results.
All the natural products take consistency to see the results. They slowly alter the appearance and health of the skin but do it consistently. So make this ritual a weekly or biweekly tradition and involve your family to take part in it.

The Process: Every family in India has their own heirloom recipe of Ubtan face mask passed down several generations within the family and this Ubtan I share with you is mine. All the ingredients are sourced by my mother and some of them home grown by my grandmother. They are then dried in the sun for weeks. My dad then takes them to a small local mill and has them ground into fine powder. This ubtan in your little jar carries with it a bit of my ancestry, a lot of care and intentions by several people whose faces you will never see but whose good intentions you will feel. So cherish the process of using this little jar of magic and vedic wisdom.
The Benefits: Ubtan face mask fights skin infections and cleanses and tones the skin. It improves complexion, works as an astringent, aids in exfoliation, reduces facial hair. For ages, it has been the best proven way to prevent acne and heal the acne scars.
